Tasmania (Tas), an Island Australian state, is 200 kilometres South of the South-Eastern side Australia. Bass Strait separates the Mainland from Tasmania. Tasmania includes many surrounding islands, the largest of which are Bruny Island, Cape Barren, Flinders Island, King Island, North Bruny Island. Macquarie Island (subantarctic) is also under the administration of the state. The Capital City is Hobart and other larger centres are Burnie and Devonport in the Northwest and Launceston in the North. Over 35% of Tasmania is in reserves, National Parks and World Heritage Sites. It is a great place to go caravanning or camping, in a Caravan, Campervan, Motorhome or Winnebago.
Tasmania’s size is approximately 364 kilometres North-South and 306 kilometres East-West, with a population of approximately 500, 000. It is located around Latitude 42° South, in the path of the "Roaring Forties" wind that circles the earth. This helps ensure the Tasmanian climate is extremely variable with fluctuations in temperature and wind speed day to day. Tasmania has four distinct seasons. Winter is June to August with an average maximum temperature of 12 °C and snow on the higher mountain peaks. Summer is December to February with an average maximum temperature of 21 °C. Temperatures experienced range from -13.0 °C to 40.8 °C.
Annual rainfall can be up to 2,400 mm in some areas due to Tasmania’s Location and is evenly distributed throughout the year. The highest peak is Mount Ossa: 1,617m.
Climate and Geographical conditions contribute to a diverse range of vegetation, with large areas of cool temperate rainforests and moors, tall evergreen eucalypt forest and alpine heath.
Tasmania's main industries are mining, including copper, zinc, tin, and iron; agriculture; forestry; and tourism. The “Clean Green” reputation of Tasmania has led to the success of food production and exporting activities. Fruit, vegetables, seafood (e.g. Atlantic salmon, abalone and crayfish) all do well. Vineyards, beer, boutique cheeses and dairy products are exported and sold to Tourists. Cheaper air fares and two Spirit of Tasmania (Trans-Tasman) ferries have helped encourage a booming tourism industry.
