Travelling between Glen Innes & Tamworth Places to Go, Things to SeeGlen Innes – Tamworth (3.75 hrs travel) Leaving Glen Innes and heading to Tamworth, Armidale makes a lovely stop. You can either enjoy a Heritage Walk or Heritage Drive, visit the New England Regional Art Museum (containing over 1200 works and including many Australian works from the early days of settlement), the Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place (where Aboriginal arts and crafts are for sale, and there are regular exhibitions of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal artists) and the Armidale Railway Museum (showcasing the history of Great North Railway and the people who built it). Natural splendour accessible around Armidale includes the Cathedral Rock National Park (bushwalking, 360 degree panoramic views from the top of the rock), and the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park (which holds the Wollomombi Falls, the second highest vertical Drop in Australia, among other waterfalls, as well as an expanse of “Dry” Rainforest). Also in the nearby areas are a number of wineries and excellent trout fishing in the local creeks and rivers.
At Uralla you can find bushranger Captain Thunderbolt's Grave clearly marked amongst the pioneers graves in Old Uralla Cemetery. A plaque to Constable Walker, the man who killed Thunderbolt, and a statue of the legendary bushranger can be found in the town. Other history can be observed on the Uralla Heritage Walk, at the McCrossin's Mill Museum (local history) and at Hassetts Military Museum (vehicles and wartime memorabilia). Aboriginal heritage can be encountered on the Mount Yarrowyck Aboriginal Cultural Walk which takes you to see Aboriginal Rock Art. Aside from excellent views from Mount Mutton Lookout there is also another opportunity to fossick, this time for Gold at the Uralla Fossicking Area.
